About the data

Expenditure per 1,000

  • Expenditure data is the total core revenue spend as at 2017/18 financial year end and was taken from the NHS board 2017/18 accounts.
  • Population data, used to calculate spend per 1,000 population from the National Records of Scotland population estimates time series, published September 2018.

Agency and prescribing

  • Total agency spend taken from NHS board 2017/18 accounts.
  • Medical agency spend taken from ISD published data as at June 2018.
  • Drug volume data taken from ISD as at July 2018, and only includes drugs prescribed in the community and not in hospitals.

Activity and demand

  • Number of people waiting for inpatient and outpatient appointments are March census data, emergency and elective admissions, number of daycase and outpatient appointments and number of procedures are annual figures.
  • The sum of all the boards does not always equal the Scotland total as this can include patients whose residence is outwith Scotland, with no fixed abode or with unknown residence.
  • ISD published data as at September 2018.

Performance indicators

  • Performance indicators are for the quarter-ending March 2018, except for the accident and emergency, delayed discharge and referral to treatment targets, and the treatment time guarantee unavailability indicator, which all are for the month-ending March 2017.
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) data is combined for the island boards.
  • ISD data as at June 2018.
